What if the stories we tell ourselves are the very things keeping us disconnected from who we really are?

This week on Heart and Hustle, I had the absolute joy of sitting down with the brilliant and deeply inspiring Shari Foos — therapist, writer, performer, storytelling practitioner, founder of The Narrative Method, and fellow lover of curiosity, creativity, and authentic human connection.

This conversation lit me up.

We talked about:
✨ the loneliness epidemic and our deep need to be seen and heard
✨ the “cult of culture” and how society teaches us we’re not enough
✨ creativity as healing
✨ writing as a path back to your authentic voice
✨ the power of storytelling, community, laughter, and relational mindfulness
✨ learning to create a safe base within yourself

Shari shares such beautiful wisdom about reconnecting with yourself beneath all the noise, pressure, perfectionism, and conditioning.

And honestly? It felt like two soul sisters talking about possibility, beauty, change, and the magic of being fully human.

If you’ve been craving deeper connection — with yourself and others — this episode is for you.

SHARI FOOS, MA, MFT, MS, NM, is a therapist and the founder of The Narrative Method, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and free online creative writing experience serving more than 40,000 participants worldwide. The program provides a safe space for individuals to write to prompts, access their authentic voice, and connect deeply with themselves and each other through structured storytelling and relational mindfulness.

Drawing on her background in Narrative Medicine and her psychotherapy practice, Shari developed a framework that helps individuals separate from the noise, social pressure, and unrealistic narratives that shape modern life. By writing freely without criticism or judgment and witnessing others with silent appreciation, participants build self-confidence, creative flow, and the ability to form meaningful connections.

Her work has been implemented across a wide range of communities, including partnerships with the Los Angeles V.A., universities, nonprofit social service organizations, and LAUSD through teacher trainings, student programming, and facilitator certification.

A recognized expert in group dynamics and relationships, her insights have been featured in Real Simple, Shondaland, and the Huffington Post. She is also the co-founder of BRIDGE at Antioch University, an award-winning humanities program for underserved communities, and a recipient of the New Directions for Veterans Community Hero Award.

Through her salons, Shari has interviewed a wide range of cultural and intellectual figures including Jane Fonda, Ken Burns, Morgan Neville, Alex Gibney, Ben Cohen, Eugene Drucker, Adam Schiff, Abigail Disney, Steve Guttenberg, Tom Werner, Niobe Way, Marisa Weiss, Jennifer Wallace, Nabil Ayers, and Dr. Barbara Natterson.
