Summer of Distractions

Summer of Distractions

Hey, how’s your focus these days? Do you ever feel like you are walking in a fog?

I do… my mind just goes bonkers with all the to-dos, the return emails, the pressure of wanting to be perfect! And then it all turns into mush…ha….

I will tell you that I have had a summer of distractions…I had plans to do so many things, workwise ( oh yea, working on my latest book project, fix both of my websites, deeper connections, more dance moves), body and health-wise ( lose weight, go to the gym everyday, tone up), and fun wise ( which I never used to be good at, but now I am too good LOL)…but I’ve had so many distractions.

Some self-imposed, some other things that I had to take care of while I’m spending another summer helping take care of my mom ( who just turned 99!). She’s wonderful , and it is an honor to spend more time with her, but there’s always things… house repairs, doctor appts, hospital runs at 4 am, cooking ( of course I could cook 24/7!

Of course then there’s always the fun things, like music jams, tiki parties, bowling, shopping.

I do believe I now have a full blown case of ADHD, described as Inattentive Presentation… or in my terms, lack of focus and follow through. Crazy making…

Which is funny because that is the primary thing I help my women clients with as a Lifestyle Coach… Yes, it happens to all of us…

I talked briefly about this in my Monday Mojo talk

What to Do When Your Daily Rituals Get Interrupted…

and you can catch the replay here, it’s short, about 17 minutes… and I am loving these Monday quick chat sessions, you can join me for the next few weeks for my summer mojo (right on my FB)

We all have them, and we’ve tried to establish some lovely grouding daily routines – those comforting routines that anchor our days, providing a sense of stability and control.
Whether it’s your morning coffee ritual, your midday workout, or your evening wind-down routine, these daily rituals can feel sacred.
But what happens when life throws a curveball and those cherished routines are unexpectedly disrupted? It can be jarring, frustrating, and even feel destabilizing.
Time to reorganize attitude and time to make it all work…
Damn…
Here’s some pointers, and yep, I’m right there too…

So first,

Acknowledge and Validate Your Feelings

The first step when your daily rituals are disrupted is to acknowledge how you feel about it. It’s okay to feel annoyed, disappointed, or even a little lost. It’s all valid. Trying to suppress them can lead to greater frustration. Take a moment to name what you’re experiencing. Like this: “I’m frustrated that I can’t do my usual morning meditation today,” or “I’m overwhelmed because my evening routine is completely off.”

The best thing is to practice flexibility and adaptability, let it all go and then you can change it up.

Life is unpredictable, and rigid adherence to routines can sometimes lead to unnecessary stress. Don’t beat yourself up, or anyone else!

When an interruption occurs, see it as an opportunity to practice flexibility. (Another Opportunity for Growth!!!)

Can you adapt your ritual? If your morning run is cancelled, perhaps you can do a quick bodyweight workout at home or take a brisk walk around the block later in the day. If your usual lunch break is cut short, can you find a quiet moment for a mindful snack? The goal isn’t to replicate the ritual, but to find a way to honor its intention in a modified form. Change.

Prioritize and focus on the main things. This is where my MAP ( Magic Action Plan) comes in handy.

When disruption strikes, identify the main purpose and benefit of your ritual. Is it stress reduction, energy boost, creativity, or simply a moment of peace? When you know the purpose, you can focus on finding other ways to get there. If your morning journaling ritual is about setting intentions, you could quickly jot down a few key goals on a sticky note or in a digital memo.

Then you can create Mini-Rituals.

Sometimes, a complete overhaul of a routine isn’t necessary. Instead, try to create “mini-rituals” that can be squeezed into smaller windows of time or adapted to new environments. These short, intentional actions can still provide a sense of continuity and comfort. This could be as simple as taking three deep breaths before starting a new task, listening to a favorite song while preparing a quick meal, or taking a moment to stretch after sitting for a long period.

Really babe, it doesn’t have to be hard. We can make it hard or we can make it easy and doable… our choice.

Unsettling and frustrating, yes, but they can also be an unexpected invitation to try something new. Perhaps a cancelled workout opens up time for a new hobby, or a change in your commute leads you to discover a new coffee shop. Viewing these interruptions as opportunities for something new, can shift your perspective from frustration to curiosity. Love that word, curiosity!

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. There will be days when things just don’t go according to plan, and your routines will be completely upended. That’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up for not sticking to your usual schedule. Self-compassion is key.

Remind yourself that you’re doing your best and that life sometimes requires us to pivot. Get back on track when you can, but don’t let a temporary disruption derail your overall well-being.

So there’s a few things I’m paying attention to, stepping into embracing the changes, and not putting pressure on myself. I hope that is helpful for you too…

We are human after all, and life is full of beautiful opportuniites…

Here’s a song for you. thanks Rag’nBone Man

The Cult of Busy

The Cult of Busy

Let’s talk!

The Cult of Busy

In our wacky and often dysfunctional (these days) modern world, “busy” has weirdly become a badge of honor. I see folks wear packed schedules and overflowing inboxes as proof of importance, productivity, and even self-worth.

The constant hum of activity, the endless to-do lists, the feeling of always being “on”—it’s become the default setting for many, almost a religion we all subscribe to. And even using it as an excuse, instead of saying ‘No”.

But what if this relentless pursuit of busyness is actually hindering us, rather than helping us? What if the true path to fulfillment lies not in doing more, but in doing less?

The Allure of Always Being On

There’s a subtle but powerful societal pressure to be busy. From a young age, I feel many of us are taught that hard work and constant effort lead to success. Social media often portrays a curated version of productivity, where everyone seems to be achieving groundbreaking things, running marathons, and building empires all before breakfast. This constant bombardment of “success stories” can make us feel inadequate if we’re not constantly striving, constantly working, constantly busy. Know what I mean?

Some folks equate busyness with importance. If you’re busy, you must be in demand, you must be valuable, you must be making a difference. This can lead to a fear of idleness, a feeling that if we’re not doing something productive, we’re wasting time or falling behind.

While the idea of being busy might seem appealing on the surface, I think the reality is that it comes with a steep price. What can happen when one is so busy?

  • Burnout: Ohhh baby, I’ve been there several times. This is the most obvious consequence. Constant stress and lack of rest lead to exhaustion, both physical and mental. This manifests as fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and a general feeling of being overwhelmed.
  • Decreased Productivity: Ironically, being too busy can actually make us less productive. Could be some ADHD setting in…When our minds are constantly racing, we struggle to focus, make thoughtful decisions, and engage in creative problem-solving. We might be doing a lot, but are we doing it well? Not necessarily.
  • Strained Relationships: When we’re always busy, our relationships often take a backseat. We might miss out on quality time with loved ones, become less present during conversations, and neglect the nurturing that healthy relationships require.
  • Poor Health: Chronic stress impacts our physical health in numerous ways, from weakened immune systems to increased risk of heart disease and digestive issues. Lack of sleep, poor nutrition, and neglecting exercise often go hand-in-hand with an overly busy lifestyle.
  • Loss of Self: When we’re constantly caught in the cycle of doing, we can lose touch with who we are outside of our roles and responsibilities. We might forget our passions, our hobbies, and what truly brings us joy.

Quitting the cult of busy isn’t about becoming lazy or unproductive. It’s about being intentional with our time and energy, prioritizing what truly matters, and creating space for rest, reflection, and joy.

I often help guide my coaching clients to stop, sit, listen in…to their deepest desires, changes they wish to make, to re-find themselves.

A couple of ideas for you:

  • Identify Your Values: What truly matters to you? What do you want your life to look like? When you align your actions with your values, you’ll find it easier to say no to things that don’t serve you.
  • Learn to Say No: This is perhaps the most challenging but crucial step. You don’t have to agree to every request or opportunity. Protect your time and energy by politely declining commitments that don’t align with your priorities.
  • Prioritize Ruthlessly: Not all tasks are created equal. Use methods like my M.A.P (Magic Action Plan) to categorize your tasks and focus on what truly moves the needle. Let go of the need to do everything perfectly.
  • Schedule Down Time: Don’t just schedule meetings and deadlines. Schedule time for rest, relaxation, hobbies, and simply doing nothing. Treat this “white space” as non-negotiable.
  • Disconnect Regularly: In our always-on world, it’s vital to unplug. Break the habit. Set boundaries around technology, take digital detoxes, and resist the urge to constantly check emails or social media.
  • Embrace Imperfection: The desire to be busy often stems from a need for control and perfection. Understand that it’s okay for things to be “good enough” rather than absolutely perfect.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Being present in the moment can help you appreciate what you have and reduce the urge to constantly be striving for the next thing.

Quitting the cult of busy is a journey, not a destination. It requires conscious effort, self-compassion, and a willingness to make changes. But the rewards—improved well-being, stronger relationships, greater clarity, and a deeper sense of fulfillment—are immeasurable.

It’s time to reclaim our time, our energy, and ultimately, our lives.

Episode #198

Hello there,
Today I have a fun interview with this creative duo,
Audrey and Jennifer!

Audrey and I start off talking casually about getting tattoos~ and I love our informal start to our conversation, before the actual recording!!! You get to see how it all gets started and how I play with these interviews… very spontaneous! and not knowing we were recording, but you get the back end of these talks for just a few minutes…I decided not to edit that out. Because I just love all the talk…
And then we get started!
Audrey and Jennifer talk about how their stories have come together, together on and off since age 6… just wow for that! And that they both began writing at the very young ages…
Co-creating, collaborating together about giving birth to creative projects, after Audrey, besides traveling the road of journalism, and corporate communication, and then becoming a birth doula, they decided to create Birth Your Truest Story, in 2017, to help other writers, first in person, and then taking the ideas and courses online.
How we always crave community and connection.
Jennifer started as a journalist and reporter, on to a PhD ( in 8 years) and becoming a professor, teaching writing, leadership, social justice, memoir, and international women’s literature at Bard College and other places.
Such great paths they have had, separately and together again. Both of them have several published books, besides lots of teaching venues.
And now is Birth Your Truest Story, with self-paced courses as well as online workshops. We discuss dreams and community and holding space for others to fulfill their ideas.
And now they are attracting spiritual and powerful writers and creating the communities they have craving!

A wonderful conversation, have a look and listen and enjoy

Watch and listen on Youtube our lively discussion.

AND…You can listen on SoundCloud.

More about Audrey:

I write literary fiction with a dark edge about what goes awry when human connection is missing from our lives. I’m the author of three novels—The Last Storyteller (2021), What Remains Unsaid (2017), and Dance of Souls (2011)—and a book of short stories, Tiny Shoes Dancing (2018), which was shortlisted for the 2019 International Rubery Book Award. My short fiction has appeared in a number of print and online publications.

I served as editor of Fault Zone, the anthology of California writers produced by the SF Peninsula Branch of the California Writers Club, and served as the branch president and VP. I was selected for a literary residency with the Shuffle Collective in 2020. In 2022, I wrapped up a nearly 20-year career as a birth doula and returned to my first calling: writing and editing. I recently co-founded the Birth Your Truest Story writers’ community with my lifelong friend, Jennifer Browdy, where I teach workshops and support a lively group of writers.

I live in northern California with my husband and two cats. Of course, I’m at work on another novel…

Dancing with Your Desires: My Virtual Women’s Group for the New Year

Dancing with Your Desires: My Virtual Women’s Group for the New Year

Hello gorgeous!

As we enter a new year, many of us are filled with a sense of hope and possibility. We may have resolutions to improve our health, our relationships, our abundance, or our careers. But what about our desires? Desires, in all of those categories, and then some!

Desires are often seen as something that should be suppressed or controlled. But in the women’s group “Dancing with Your Desires,” I believe that desires are a vital part of our lives. They are a source of energy and creativity, and they can help us to live more fulfilling lives.

However, sometimes they have gotten blocked, or we have fallen into complacency, or feel like we don’t have time, or are not worthy. That list can go on. I want to release those old thought patterns, habits, and beliefs. You, my friend, are worth so much more. And we want to love the life we are living, NOW. At this age, at this time, today, as we move into the new year.

In our weekly online group, we will explore our desires in a safe, sacred, and supportive environment. We will learn to identify our desires, to understand their origins, and to find ways to express them in healthy and productive ways. To get clear, and to make your MAP, your Magic Action Plan, to you can truly take action

We will also explore the ways in which our desires can be connected to our fears and insecurities. We will learn to work with these fears and insecurities so that they no longer hold us back from living our lives to the fullest. To release, and rewrite!

“Dancing with Your Desires” is for a group for women who are ready to embrace their desires and to live more authentic and fulfilling lives. Are you ready to join us?

If you are interested in joining us, you can register here:
