Hitting the Brakes: Stillness How Movers and Shakers Find Their Chill
How to Create Stillness
Let’s be real. If you’re a “mover and shaker”—the entrepreneur, the leader, the relentless idea-machine—your life runs on high-speed motion. You love the buzz of a packed schedule and the rush of nailing big goals. It’s exhilarating, right?
This is something I have thrived on in the past, you know, that beautiful creative energy, the whirlwind of creating, and always running and scheduling new things. The list that keeps on growing.
But here’s the kicker: What happens when all that constant motion starts feeling less like a rush and more like burnout? When the engine that drives you is sputtering because you’ve been running on fumes? Boy howdy, I’ve been there several dozen times!
This is the sneaky paradox of being a high-achiever, a Type A, the Manifesting Generator (Human Design): the very activity that defines you can totally wipe you out. The secret to lasting success and actually enjoying your life isn’t about pushing harder; it’s about learning how to find those moments of deep, restorative chill. Sometimes you just have to find out the hard way. But listen to me!
Stillness, that is my theme word now, for 2026.
Chill Time Isn’t Coasting
For those of us whose badge of honor is being “busy,” the word “stillness” can sound like a total threat. It sounds like quitting, being lazy, or—gasp—failing. But that’s a huge misunderstanding.
Stillness isn’t the absence of work; it’s the presence of awareness.
Read that again!
Stillness isn’t the absence of work; it’s the presence of awareness.
It’s the conscious choice to step off the hamster wheel for a second to check in with your body, clear the mental clutter, and recharge your core battery. Think of it like a mandatory pit stop for a Formula 1 car. You’d never expect it to win without a quick refresh!
I’ve got Three Go-To Chill Strategies
You’ve got a high-octane life, so integrating stillness has to be structured and simple. Here are three super-accessible ways for the busy professional to hit their “reset” button:
1. Mini-Mindfulness Moments (The 60-Second Refresh)
Forget about needing a 30-minute cushion session. You can sneak stillness into the random gaps of your day:
The Transition Pause: Before you jump onto your laptop or right after a stressful call, take just 60 seconds. Close your eyes. Drop your shoulders away from your ears. Take three slow, deep breaths, really noticing the air moving. This tiny action wipes the slate clean and sets a calmer tone for whatever’s next.
Sensory Anchors: Waiting for your coffee to brew or sitting at a traffic light? Focus intensely on one non-distracting sensation. Feel the warmth of your mug, listen to the distant sounds, or just watch the clouds. It immediately yanks your brain out of future-planning mode and grounds you in the now.
2. Physical Reset for a Clear Head (The Body Tune-Up)
Your body and mind are best friends. Stress usually hides as unconscious tension—a tight jaw, hunched shoulders, or shallow breaths.
Schedule a “Posture Alarm”: Set a timer for once an hour. When it goes off, don’t check your notifications! (phone addiction anyone?) Stand up, roll your shoulders, stretch high, and do a quick body scan. Ask: Where am I clenched? Release your jaw, relax your tongue, and deliberately soften your shoulders. This physical act sends an instant “chill out” message to your whole system.
The Unplugged Stroll: Commit to one walk per day—even if it’s just 10 minutes—where your phone stays in your pocket or on silent. This is my non-negotiable when I take my Rosiedog out for a walk every morning. No podcasts, no calls, no email checks. This gives your subconscious mind the space it needs to process things, which is often when brilliant ideas pop up. And also just check out the beauty that surround me.
3. Setting Up Your Stillness Shields (The Digital Blackout)
The biggest threat to your chill is constant input. Movers and shakers are often glued to their devices, making true rest impossible. How true this has been for me in the past.
Establish a Digital Curfew: Pick a time (say, 8:00 PM) after which all non-essential work and social media apps are a no-go. This is non-negotiable for letting your brain power down before bedtime, which is the ultimate rest and recovery session.
Protect Your Morning Hour: ALWAYS! Guard the first 60 minutes of your day from external demands. Use this time for reflection, stretching, reading, or just enjoying a quiet cup of tea—no immediate inbox diving. You get to set the vibe for your day, instead of just reacting to everyone else’s urgent needs.
The Payoff of Peace
Finding your chill isn’t some fluffy nice-to-have; it’s a smart business and personal move. By building these small pockets of peace into your schedule, you’re not cutting back on productivity—you’re boosting your focus (Amen), slicing through decision fatigue, and protecting your long-term creative fuel.
The most powerful, successful, and creative people aren’t the ones who never take a break; they’re the ones who know exactly how and when to pause. That ensures when they do move, it’s with laser-like intention, clarity, and sustainable energy. Embrace the break, find your peace, and watch your success thrive.
I just love these breaks in the day, in thought patterns, in taking a deep breath and resetting myself. It has taken a long time to get to this chill place, and I also struggle with saying NO, going into overwhelm, and stopping myself from taking on too much.
