Homeward bound! Jul 31, 2012

Thankyou Flagstaff, and all of the dancers I have had the honor of spending the last week with here in Arizona, teaching Collective Soul Level One, and the several workshops over the weekend. Hilary Giovale, from Gypsy Caravan Dance Co, Int, who lives in Flagstaff, and all her dancers plus, the “man committee” (don’t you love that?) did such a lovely job of taking care of me, and Carol Vance, while we taught, and performed in the hafla, and had a day of filming more online classes. Plus showed us this very special little town of Flagstaff.

We were treated to several HUGE thunderstorms, truly magical! That is one of the things I miss from growing up in Ohio, the thunderstorms and the lightning bugs, which we don’t have in Portland. Big kabooms and great white light shows. Magnificent….

Bringing my Gypsy Caravan style of Tribal Bellydance to Flagstaff, not only did I get to meet many new dancers, and reconnect with some old friends, but they had the chance over the days of CS1 and the weekend to meet and dance with each other. And that is so powerful and exciting for me to watch. Taking Tribal Global…these dancers understood that it not only is about the technique, but getting outside their structured box, to be a dancer, to move like a dancer, gracefully, with power and beauty. Besides learning lots of new and funkily fabulous new moves to add to their dance repertoire, they learned to dance with both sides of their body (I know, the left side is a challenge!), and to stay grounded and connected with their own body, while being light in their feet, with the ability to move quickly. They learned how to follow in the Tribla improvisational way, in a more organic style. And to be open to new experiences, to share the dance with each other in a new and different way–very eye and soul opening. woo hoo….
I can’t wait to come back and dance with all of you….Many thanks.

Building community, one hip at a time!

Friday, what I am loving–Tribal Truly Rocks Jul 27, 2012

When I travel, I usually get more time to read and write when I am not teaching! So glancing back through my journal, I found some notes and quotes I jotted down from a recent trip to Italy!

I was teaching several sessions of my Tribal Bellydance Certification courses and workshops. In that Collective Soul group of dancers, we were journaling and talking about our dance. Whenever I do this, I am always struck by the profound statements the dancers make about this dance. How soul reaching, truth telling, art making, it can be, universally, and personally.

I asked the dancers how is Tribal powerful? (I so love that word these days!)

Ilaria said, “the dance is a physical concept of union, with us. Just like with other creatures, the fishes, the bees, the birds.”

Fiorella said, “there is a spiral of energy that creates trust with the other dancers.”

Denise continues on, saying, “the dance nurtures faith in the others. It is a universal language of the body. And creates a string connection of joy and happiness, a union.”

Catherine talks about the dance as having a sheer force of power, as on an army. It is concrete and tangible, as well as transformational.

Another dancer talked of it being meditation in movment.

These discussions are so heartfelt, and some of these girls are talking in Italian as it gets translated to me. Dance is truly a universal language.

Taking Tribal Global…oh yea….Tribal truly rocks!

Collective Soul in Flagstaff…Day One Jul 26, 2012

Flagstaff, Arizona, and on to day 2 of Collective Soul Level One. I have the honor of working with seven delightful dancers from across the US–New York, Maryland, and a few spots here in Arizona–Tucson, Goodyear, and of course, Flagstaff. Hilary Giovale, my student as well as a dancer in GCDC, is the sponsor for this 3 day Tribal Certification Intnesive as well as a sold out weekend of workshops and a hafla full of dancers and friends. I’ve never been to Flagstaff and am thrilled to be here with these amazing women.
Day One was energizing and full of lots of talking, about shifting ways of thinking and dancing Tribal. Being an improvisational dance based on a structured language of steps is the basis of this group-centered dance, but learning how to be a dancer, in general, is the key.
To move the body, being light on your feet, trusting yourself as a dancer, so that you can not only dance within your own tribe, but have the exhilarating ability to dance with others of different backgrounds and styles, instead of being locked into only one certain structure of moves. Taking Tribal Global in the process…
Most of thes dancers with me this week have been dancing for years, so you think taking a Level One course might be too simple for them. But I love to present new ways of working the dance as well as the body, and if you haven’t had the weekly classes with me at my home front, then there are lots of new inputs and ideas for them, as well as personal critiques and attention. So yesterday we had lots do a-ha moments, some great laughs, good sweating drills, journaling, and more step breakdowns.
These gals are working it, and I look forward to sharing more today on Day 2!
Then to follow the dance day up, Hilary drove me down past Sedona to Clarkdale to visit a dancing friend from many years, Andrea from Blue Dragon dance. This is gorgeous country, it was an amazing day with a few threats of monsoons and thunderstorms, but the night filled us with a half moon, a fantastic supper overlooking the quiet cliffs, and lots of talk of life and dance and a friendship catch up and fabulous reconnection…I love where dance takes me on my life journey…such a treat…
Many thanks.

Dance to Word Jul 23, 2012

What do you do when you lose your way?

You stopped something and you want to get it back, but find it hard to reconnect? From going to a dance class, to eating healthy, to going to the gym, to writing every morning, to practicing your guitar, to even taking some time off and playing… finding that motivation or connection can be hard, like jumping off a cliff backwards to repel down! Once you are over the edge, you can do it, you have to do it! It’s just that first step that is so difficult, for me.

And then once you did it, and you are there, and you realize how truly fabulous it is, and how glad you are to be there, and now that you are in it, you are good to go!

Ha, I know that feeling well. It is like sabotage sometimes, for me to get me to do what I really want to do. Sometimes I can find a million excuses to not do something I really want or need to do. But once I got it back, woo hoo, I am rockin and rollin!

So what do you do?

I do love spontaneity. I live for the opportunity to try something new, or change my plans, as I dislike being tied to a schedule. But I really do need the discipline, so I can get everything done that I need, the work I don’t like as well as the work that I love.

Getting on a daily regime is good, but doesn’t always work for me, as I travel so much. If I get on a roll, then I find when I have to travel, that roll just gets lost, then I have to find another way.

So I just keep lists of what needs to happen by when, notes of ideas –need to’s and want to’s–along with all the brilliant sparks that come to me! Yep, queen of lists, that is me…

But I do other things to keep me going to. Probably the most important thing I do for myself everyday is that I have to move, whether it be dancing,  playing with and walking my dogs, riding my bike, gardening, going to the gym. If I have a day at my desk without getting up and really working my body, I am drained and lethargic, but if I get up and work out, drink a bunch of water, get some air outside, whatever, I feel so much better and can rock the house! Know what I mean? And of course, I find that the better shape I am in, the more that is necessary…

I do try to journal everyday, as well… and I’ve been trying to meditate with Deepak Chopra with his 21 Day Challenge! Loving it…

So there are a few things that I do. Now how about you?

What do you do, and can you write about it?

I’d love to know and share…

To be an entertainer Jul 20, 2012

Many people have told me that I make the dance look so easy, effortless, fun.

It is fun for me, no question about it, and that always comes through my dance, I know that. And the fun part is dancing with my partners, my sister dancing friends, sharing the love of moving and creating.

Easy? Well, no. It’s not easy. It is hard, sometimes very hard. But that drive to refine is part of my process, my journey. It is very rewarding when I conquer what I’m working on. When I get good at it, it does become easier, when it is in my body, in my muscle memory, when I’ve trained myself to flow and have practiced it a million times. Well then, maybe easier…and maybe not, but I still love it and can share it with you.

That is the role of performer, to share effortlessly, to showcase, or highlight, what is is they do, if they are a master at it. The entertainer has a whole other skill to develop once they learn the action. They need to be able to present it, effortlessly. To be comfortable in their skin.To be an entertainer takes another set of skills, a driving desire from within to want to share, to have a gift for sharing, like a teacher wants to teach, or a wordsmith want to write. It is what they are fantastic at, not just good.

Fantastic takes practice, determination, skill, love,  passion, and the innate ability to pull it off! Woo hoo…to be a champion of their own authenticity. A performer works with creative enthusiasm and empowerment. Empowering oneself as well as the audience.Enthusiasm spreads. Pass it on.

How long does it take to get there? Everyone has different paces and skill sets and time constraints, among a zillion other issues. But don’t give yourself excuses, that won’t work. The most important part of the whole process is to be truthful to yourself, to really know what you want, to know what you are doing, and why. Without peer pressure, meaning you are not performing just because your friend wants you to. Honest evaluation, revealing critiques, hard work, passion. Knowing your limits too. You want to be brilliant, to shine, to glow, to revel in your abilities and knowledge of what you love. Do you want it? How long it takes doesn’t really matter; it is still about the process, the journey, the being in the moment. That is where the power comes from. And the wisdom that you derive from that goes into what you can then put out to the world. Gorgeousness.

So easy, no. Time commitment, yes. Passion, curiosity, desire, ability, soul-craving, heart-opening need…check. Fun, hell yea!
