another blog to love and positive inspiration Aug 30, 2009

How do you get inspired? the ongoing topic…

A way for me to get inspired is by reading what other people do, what they think and write, it’s as if they were a mirror, or not, and gives me a time to reflect on myself and what I am doing and what I’ve set out to do… Derek Silvers, an ex-circus man turned musician then ingenious entrepeneur, the former owner of the amazingly successful CD Baby, keeps things moving for me…

HIs blog topic yesterday was…”What do you hate not doing?”

http://sivers.org/hatenot

Derek writes: We’ve all asked ourselves, “What do I really love?” or “What makes me happy?” I’ve wrestled when the emotion-based answers conflict with expectations. (I’m a musician, but I love working alone. Does that mean I should be a producer instead of performer? I’m an entrepreneur but I hate doing business deals. Does that mean I’m more of a CTO than CEO?) Last week I thought of it a different way, that I like better:

What do you hate NOT doing? (What makes you feel icky, irritated, annoyed or off-track if you don’t do it enough?) .

..and I thought this was just a super positive way to look at what I am, am not doing. So…

*I don’t like not moving my body every day, wether it be dancing, doing my personal workout, throwing hay to the goats, gardening…I am a pysical person, I need to move my body or I get super restless.

*I don’t like not reading every day. I must read, it does something to my psyche, me brain, my thought processes.

*I don’t like not writing every day. It helps to clear my mind, gets my ideas down on paper, gets my work done so that I can move forward on to the next project or idea or chapter.

*I don’t like not feeling connected, to myself, my family, my animals—every day. When I get too busy, it takes its  toll on my personal well-being, and my connection to my immediate community. Although good family and friends understand and accept those times of extreme busy-ness, no apologies necessary, it does not make me feel good. So there….do check out Derek’s blog…

How about you?

Can you approach your intentions and inspirations from that angle? Or think about what you want to do in terms of what you hate not doing? Bring it on!

~~~~~~~And down to my reading…
~~the $64.00 Tomato, by William Alexander Hilarious, made my howl out loud, which I love to do when I ‘m reading…
~~Tribes: We Need You To Lead Us, by Seth Goldin Here is something to get your brain cranked up!
~~Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything. by  Elizabeth Gilbert the ever popular book and author these days, and I still love it, and her! The writing is so authentic and soul-searching.
Here is a lovely clip from the TED conference with Elizabeth speaking about creative genius, what do you think?
I love this song… Aug 28, 2009
Listening to some tunes on my itunes mix and what comes up, but a favorite Gypsy Caravan song from Remarkably Remixed…
Six/Eight Reloaded
a grooving 6/8 rhythm with a wonderful bass line…
what do you think?
When I was teaching in Australia awhile back, I nonchalantly said how much I loved this song. Deb, a lovely dancer, went back to her troupe that day, and they decided to perform to it for me at the hafla that weekend. Pretty cool, eh?
Dance Intensives Jul 29, 2009
Patty, myself, Lai, Angela, Brenda, Natasha, Darby, Sherry
I have just finished up the round of six days of all-day dance intensives—Collective Soul Level One and Teacher Training Level One here around Portland. Plus regular dance classes all week and a mini-performance at the farmer’s market! It is nice to have a break in this over 100 degree heatwave we are having! whew… The dancers were all troopers in the heat, the long days and nights dancing and discussing tribal bellydance and beyond—we sightsee’d, I got to cook for them a few times, and we had an informal dance session with live music. They played with my goats and chickens and dogs and we walked around the farm.They danced and then got tested. It takes a while to get the dance and the knowledge in the bones and muscles and brains of the body. Not everyone passes the certification tests right away. We all worked hard and I am honored to be able to dance with such fine women who share the love of tribal bellydance! Congratulations goes to Sherry, Darby, and Angela for getting certified in CS1 this round!
Then we continued right into Teacher Training with Darby, Sherry,  Angela, and Merina (certified last year in CS1) and danced through the next three days.
Getting down to the nitty gritty technique of each move, the nuances, the music, the rhythms, the zils, there is so much involved in becoming a great dance teacher, combining business and art. We talked about a lot of it!  So great to share with all of us, we learn from each other. And we danced some more… and then we tested again! Congrats to Darby and Sherry for passing this round of tests!
I am thrilled to pass on, to share, to teach, coach, advise the dancers who wish to carry this tradition on, the ones who want to learn from the roots, and help them acheive their dance goals. I look forward to continuing to work and dance with these lovely ladies, and I wish them well on their new paths!
…loud zaghareets all around!
and another CD! Apr 01, 2009
speaking of the Master Musicians of Jajouka!
Jeff went to see them play recently in Portland and loved the show.
We saw them years ago in Seattle, and I remember the line of musicians, drummers and horn players, lined up on stage, and an older musician dancing across the stage having the time of his life, playing on his mizmar! It was a great show.
Jeff saw this tour and some of his words about the music was that it was powerful and trancey, with a folkloric and tribal edge. He got their latest CD, below, and it is fab… the cover art is also fantastic, with a simple and powerful graphic image of the horn players on the front, and the drummers on the back, very cool…
tonight in dance class Apr 01, 2009
not only did the class love my Arabic Cafe CD that I played, and we danced to many songs from that CD, but they loved one of my all time favs, Whirling, by Omar Faruk Tekbilek. He is an amazing man as well as a master musician, and I love all of his CDs. but this one is definitely my favorite along with the title track. I’ve been playing it for years, and it still moves me, and makes me want to move my body too.
Jeff, from Gypsy Caravan, is truly inspired by Faruk and his music, having studied ney and zurna with him on and off for years.
other excellent CDs by Faruk is Fata Morgana, with Michael Askill. this has some great danceable songs too, and is wonderful listening music. He has many other CDs, as he seems to be very prolific, and likes to collaborate with other musicians.
A wonderful zurna piece is called Barburi, off of “One’. I can’t sit still to this song. Let me know what you think!
Oh, by the way, the zurna is that wonderful, loud, trilling, double-reeded horn, like the Master Musicians of Jajouka play, that Jeff plays and I love.
Enjoy, you might need earplugs!
What am I listening to? Mar 31, 2009
I wanted some inspiration as I was planning my classes for tonight. I dug out Arabic Cafe, the most amazing 3 cd set of pure arabic chilled beats, I bought when I was in london several years ago. It has beautiful soothing tunes, with some funky chillin’ songs, with some melodic songs, and definitley some groovin’ beats. For the longest time you could not find it in the states, but now you can, I am so glad to see. 3 cds of so many different artists, you can’t beat it, and you sure can dance to it :)
So this is what I am dancing to, listening to, getting inspired by….
Paulette and Fade To Black Dec 27, 2008
Jeff and I have been sorting through lots of old magazines, photos, articles about Gypsy Caravan, and keep coming across Fade to Black posters and photos and music! That was our band before Gypsy Caravan, think pre-goth, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, the Doors…I played keyboards with a bit of guitar
and percussion and vocals. Jeff played a mean and sexy bass —
paulette and jeff-fade to black
that’s when we fell in love :)
Fade To Black…yes, that band from San Francisco in the early 80’s,
pre-goth, moody, Fade to Black is coming back from the past, by demand…to digital distribution. Now you can hear it and buy it at
www.last.fm/
Eight tracks, Fade To Black, SF revisited, 1982-1985
featuring Paulette Rees-Denis and Jeff Rees from Gypsy Caravan, along with Brad Orgeron and Gil Ray.
