Sunday Dance To Word…Inspiration- Throw Down Your Heart Nov 25, 2012

Inspiration- Throw Down Your Heart

Last night Jeff and I had the pleasure to watch the documentary Bela Fleck, Throw Down Your Heart, with my Amazon Prime Video. This is a new treat for us, great for watching instant video as we don’t have a television, just the computer and IPad! And wow…

What an amazing documentary. Bela Flek is a white musician, banjo picker extraordinaire, and decided to show the roots of the banjo, which most of us don’t know, is Africa! So he goes there, to five cities, to play and record with musicians and singers around the country. Just himself and his recording engineer. To see how he sits in with these folk, to play, listen, record…

It puts such perspective on where we have come from as a culture, and what we have at our easy disposal here in America and other similar countries as us. And to watch how these African cultures live their daily lives, making their instruments-sometimes very crude, but incredibly beautiful and amazing sounding. They play and sing and cook and dance together as a community, an extended family, children included. The women cook together and sing. The little ones dance and pretend to play instruments as they learn. The men make the insturments. The Masai tribe belt out sounds you’ve never heard. They sing about daily life, right there on the spot, using their voices, their hands, their instruments. The women’s voices were incredible, and few facial expressions and tongue actions in the noises they made, had my jaw on the floor! All the men play the various instruments, but one women played the thumb piano, which is not usual, as the women don’t normally play. She was brilliant.

And to watch and listen to Bela sit in with them, jam, play, entering into their daily lives is astounding and inspirational and beautiful. What a player he is. I love the banjo, but never considered its roots to be Africa, as I’ve been listening to lots of American bluegrass lately. Really makes you reconsider where we all came from.

www.belafleck.com/

Lately, I’ve been really playing in my head with my dance (obsessed might be a good word), and with my body of course, but thinking about my roots in dance, where the dance comes from, what my influences are-ancient and contemporary, but also us American dancers as a culture. Tribal Bellydance–the music and the dance and where we are, both starting out and finishing up. Since we here in the US are a mishmash of cultures, and also highly technological and spoiled (which the movie puts back into perspective) and I might add also a society of consumerism, as seen by the ridiculous long lines at target and walmart over the Thanksgiving holiday.

How do I take all that and put it into my dance of ancient inspiration, modern influences, along with the celebration, family, joy, of the dance, with guts and soul? One of these days you will see what I am coming up with ! J that is a little tease for you…

Now YOU…what inspires and influences you, your dance, your thoughts about your dance? Where does it come from? How do ancient cultures influence you? Modern life? Music? Costume? Where does it come from for you? Your teacher? Books? Videos? Spirit? Can you write it down and send it over?

For now, check out this movie! Let me know what you think….

Thanks for being here…

~~~~oh and don’t forget about my Tshirt sale, now through the end of November ( do you believe December is almost here?)
It’s so much more than dance–with Lynea Gillen, Talking Tribal and more Nov 11, 2012
Join Paulette Rees-Denis and Lynea Gillen in Lynea’s yoga studio in Portland, Or, Talking Tribal…talking about Tribal Trance Dance, the Annual Tribal Bellydance Retreat at Breitenbush Hot Springs, Dance as healing, African Tribal Fusion, and more… Part 1, November 2012
https://vimeo.com/album/2100502/video/53125735
And a special treat… a poem from Lynea, that is included in my book Tribal Vision: A Celebration of Life Through Tribal Belly Dance!
It’s so much more than dance,
This artistry you have created.
It’s a rabbit hole,
A door,
A magic mirror
Into which women
Fall,
Boldly enter,
Or timidly peer
Into their own
Deep Beauty.
And the magic is so strong,
The power so deep,
That they claw after it.
They want more.
And more.
And I find that I am a part of they.
I wonder if you feel ravaged,
Mined,
Clear Cut,
Like the Goddess Demeter
Who closes up shop every winter?
But spring always arrives,
And with it
The many blossoming beauties.
The evidence of your hand is there
In the swaying hips,
The jeweled bellies,
The open hearts.
Oh yes, the open hearts.
That is the greatest gift that has been given.
Forgive us, dear mother,
Sister,
Friend,
If sometimes we forget that you are also human.
If at times,
In our enthusiasm,
We bloom with tortured moves,
And stubby hands
Or worse * ugly blue gloved costumes!
And if at times
In our carelessness
We wound your fragile human heart.
Know that we all love you.
Even in our moments of fear,
Betrayal,
Or jealousy.
We are grateful to the gifts that you give.
And we honor the sacrifices that you have made.
And this friend will never walk away.
She will stay.
And talk.
And cry.
And work it out.
Because this friendship is such a gift,
That no poem,
No matter how long,
Or clever,
Or heartfelt,
Can contain all that it holds for me.
 I love you.
Lynea
The Power In Tribal- DVD#11 review from Cayte Lawton! Nov 05, 2012
Good day my friends, this just in from English dancer Cayte Lawton..I am honored to share her words about my latest DVD project!
The Power In Tribal
I have a confession to make! I have had this fabulous DVD for three weeks now, ever since JoY, and have been enjoying it so much! It’s just that life has got in the way, so I’ve only just got around to telling you all about it. That means it’s even more urgent that you whip on over to www.paulettereesdenis.com and bag yourself a copy before you get left behind. Do it!
Which DVD am I talking about? It’s the brand new ‘Tribal Technique No. 11′ or ‘The Power in Tribal; Connection with the Earth and Each Other’ from Paulette Rees-Denis & Gypsy Caravan Dance Company Int (represented by Paulette, Cinzia and Amanda). Filmed in Milan, this follows on from Paulette’s earlier technique DVDs and so quite rightly assumes familiarity with the Gypsy Caravan format of dance, together with an understanding of the nature of tribal. Don’t pick up this DVD expecting to learn a choreography that you can perform at one hafla after another; as with all of Paulette’s DVDs this is about broadening your tribal repertoire and understanding, with new steps, combos and formations to bring into group improvisation. This truly is The Power of Tribal – but more about that later!
The DVD starts with what I can best describe as a ‘relaxed’ warm up. That really isn’t the right word for it as Paulette does work you (as always) but it really puts me in mind of the yoga classes I attend – which I find so uplifting. Yes, maybe uplifting is a better description! It’s all done on the floor – seated, lying, on hands and knees – and it just really speaks to me! Lots of yoga type stuff in there (another of Paulette’s many talents) which stretches you but at the same time is not widely unattainable for the average dancer!
I loved it – but did worry that, given the deliciously warm and euphoric feeling it all gave me, I might not be able to gear myself up for some funky GC moves. Well, I needn’t have worried! Paulette was there before me and had already accounted for that with an additional more aerobic warm up – lots of pulsing and grooving and general upping of energy. Great stuff!
Thoroughly warmed up now, it’s on to the technique section. Paulette teaches each move facing you, whilst Cinzia and Amanda stand on either side of her and carry out the moves with their backs to you, which is really helpful (particularly if you’re directionally challenged!). Paulette gives really clear explanations of the steps but, as this is not a beginner DVD, doesn’t break down the basic moves underpinning each (if this is what you need then check out her back-catalogue of technique DVDs).
There is a really funky feel to this DVD. The first two moves – Honoring the Earth and Honoring the Sky – have a real African flavour, taking us back to the roots of our dance. Arabic 5 follows, and then the sassy Shoulder Drop Combo (my favourite – sooo Gypsy Caravan!). The Double Hip Bump Combo is a new take on an old favourite (and I always love combos which build in their own switch from right to left!) and the Swivel is a great new travelling step. The power and grace of both the Huntress and the Arabic Rotation Combo really speak to me and the funky Tunisian Twist is another move full of sass and attitude (that will always remind me of Deirdre MacDonald!).
The final moves on the DVD – the High 5, Low 5 and Moroccan Box – actually made me really reflect on Tribal Connection (Aha – you didn’t think it was going to be one of THOSE posts, did you?!). The 5s both start with a physical connection – hands touching – which is momentarily lost as the dancers turn, but is then regained smoothly and seamlessly, just embodying for me the way in which that connection between us as we dance runs far deeper than just the moves. It is indeed a connection of spirits and souls. The Moroccan Box, with its beautiful cascading arms establishing a connection of hands, which later gives way to the perfect synchronicity of a Shimmy Box done in a diagonal line formation (that particular combination always looks so magnificent – hips, arms, directions all attuned in absolute timing!) has a similar feeling. Together, body, mind and spirit. A collective soul!
Enough meanderings!! The DVD now moves on to drills – carried out by Cinzia and Amanda, with appropriate reminders on technique from Paulette. The first drill section is done with the dancers facing front, the second with their backs towards you which is fantastic for dancing along. As with the whole DVD the drills are shot against the crisp, clean background of a Milan dance studio. The dancers all wear black – clean lines which, whilst monochrome in effect, ensure that the moves can all be really clearly seen and followed (this is a technique DVD after all – teaching moves is its key intention, and the setting really helps to facilitate this).
The final part of the DVD is an informal chat between the three dancers about the Power of Tribal. I always enjoy this – a key feature of Paulette’s recent DVDs. As a ‘baby’ tribal dancer one of the things that I really appreciated about the first regular workshops I attended (with Chris Ogden of 400 Roses and North Wind Tribal) was the opportunity to ‘Talk Tribal’ during break time. As a tribal newbie I just wanted to soak up everything there was to learn about this beautiful style of dance, and those talks really set me on the right path. Similarly the talks on Paulette’s DVDS give me food for thought, reaffirm my own feelings about the dance, heighten that feeling of connection within the tribal community. Thank you so much ladies for sharing this with us!
So would I recommend this DVD? If you want to feel the power of tribal – oh yes! If you want to feel that tribal connection – oh yes! If you want to get your tribal groove on with some really funky moves – oh yes! Most definitely!
The DVD ends with some photos, one of which I just have to share with you here. It’s of Paulette, Amanda and Cinzia sashaying through the streets of Milan. It is just so joyful, so full of spirit, so tribal! I adore it!
Until next time – happy dancing. And remember ….
TRIBAL ROCKS!
Enthusiasm is infectious Oct 23, 2012
Hello my beautiful friends…
Well, I’ve been back and forth across the country and oceans so many times this past year… it has been a truly amazing adventure, especially when I reflect back on where I was at this time last year…
You’ve heard me mention some of these things before–closing up my wine bar/veggie cafe in my little town, closing up my farm, shifting dreams, surviving, moving back to my beautiful home in Portland, kickstarting my self and my dance life again full of renewed enthusiasm and a few dancing sisters who also were kicking my ass to get dancing and shaking again…
Enthusiasm is infectious (tweet that!)…and it can go along way, when you have friends, students, associates who support and believe in you, even after you take a hiatus.You spend time questioning, reflecting, evaluating, remembering, and digging deep.  And that is what happened to me…whoa…and it was truly enlightening, encouraging, exciting (any more e-words in that category?!) but mostly, you have to believe in yourself. Quiet down and listen, then…
Moving on, following your path, trusting your self, engaging your creative spirit, setting out on a familiar journey but with new eyes…it is all about stepping out of the box, and trying want you want…not want anyone else wants, but what you believe in your heart is true for you, your life’s calling, your dream idea, and not always knowing where that will take you either…does it matter, really?
Said over and over again, but the journey is where it is at…A friend posted a halloween photo of Gypsy Caravan in New Orleans, years ago, when we used to go every year as a troupe and take dancing and musician friends to play with us as we lead the french quarter halloween parade…now that is the place to go if you love halloween! To revisit that photo and that time, what a freakin blast that was, and a friend also posted memories of that journey, with sights, and smells, and tastes that were so vivid, still, because it was that experience, right then, that grabbed hold, and was still remembered, with fondness. To be in the moment, no matter where it might end up…and by the way, happy halloween!
***FLASH NEWS***Halloween Gypsy Caravan special for you, today  through next Wednesday October 31st!
~~~~~NOW, back to the other conversation!!

Let me show you a few books that helped me, that you might enjoy! These are all very different books–creative, spiritual, business–since I am a book junkie and an avid reader, I love to share what inspires me, and also to support others in their creative ventures, so on my crazy road, these books and messages have knocked me around a bit or a lot, in a good way.

Have you read any of these? Check them out, let me know what you think…

~~~~~
So, one of my last creative ventures for this year was to release the latest DVD! Wowza! I did it, and am so excited to share it with you, in fact, all three of the latest Tribal Technique DVDs (#9, 10, 11)!  This DVD was so fun to make, to envision, to dance with GC dancers Cinzia and Amanda in the making. I love these steps, the connectedness with the others, the moves make me so happy, to dance them together. Which is what the DVD is about, that connection that tribal gives us. The three of us had a lively conversation at the end of the DVD too… which I loved making.
I think I will start my own Talk show!…I get so excited about sharing with you what others are thinking, we don’t usually have much talking time, out loud, about our dance, and how it feels, what it does to and for us…the trials as well as the joys…so watch for more of these video blogs! I”ve got a few up now and will post another one tomorrow…So exciting, I hope you enjoy those as well… see the links below if you have missed them.
**By Phil Chan, July 18, 2012
“The arts make us who we are.
I got into dance because my mother sat next to a dancer from the Hong Kong Ballet on a flight back from San Francisco. For a child full of energy, dance seemed to be a great outlet for my inexhaustible nature. Twenty years later, it is a source of my greatest strength and a connection to my truest nature —- the focus of the daily class, the quiet inward moment of thanks I give to my parents before every show, the vulnerability of the stage, and the relief of the ovation. Dance has given me discipline, drive, curiosity, and has been the guiding light in my life in shaping who I am as a person. In my darkest moments, dance has been my steady comfort and greatest source of personal joy and exploration.”
*What do you listen to? Dance to? Any new tunes you want to share? Any sites you want me to look at? What causes do you support? Come on peeps, lets see what’s up for you? The web is an amazing place these days, so much oozing creativity–tidbits of wisdom, inspirations, words, photos, shows, etc… let’s keep it thriving by supporting and sharing!
Be the most brilliant light you can be…shine on my friends!
Wednesday Thoughts and Quotes – What makes you you? Jun 22, 2012
I am a dance teacher and a write…for my life’s work…not one, not the other, both…I can’t be one without the other…
in reality I am many things… or should I say, many things make up my crazy sexy life human being that I am!
I am a dancer, a teacher, a writer, a musician, a singer, a performer, a cook, a wife, a lover, a friend, a best friend, a coach, an instigator, an innovator, an artist, a gardener, a tattooed one, a bleached blond 50-something honky tonkin’ guitar player, a glamper, a hostess, a homemaker, a mother of many, a daughter, a sister, a loyal being, an earth worshipper, a caregiver, a passionate soul, a wine drinker, a vegetarian, a creatrix, a photographer….. oh, I’m sure I can keep that list going for a while.
How about you? Can you write me a list of who and what you are…or again, what makes you you?
Define yourself with delicious words, color yourself, with preciseness, with passion, with truth….
The dream list can come later…. but now, today, what makes you you? There may be words in there you would not want anyone else to read. Hhmmm, what to do about that? There may be words that make you glow, shine with pride. Rock on! And you should allow yourself to shine, to glow, to love who you are, no humbleness allowed here, my friends…
But if I were to really want to define me, my life’s work, I would say that I am a dance teacher and a writer. Today, those feel like my greatest callings in life, where  and how I empower others through my experience and knowledge, which is what I love to do the most. I am on fire when I am in these modes. I can give the world to someone who wants it, truely, heart and soul. It is the most rewarding, and the most selfless thing I can do. Selfless, because nothing else exists in those moments, does that make sense? It is not about me, but about them, what I can do to help, my little corner of the world, it all makes a difference, every little act, every thought, and thoughts become things, says one of my gurus, Mike Dooley, www.tut.com),
So what are you thinking right now? You know, you can make it happen…
Now, some of you may know me by now, I love lists….so I want you to get that list going. What makes you you?
It seems on my blog, I want to have certain days be certain subjects… but when I am on fire, I need to go with the light, the burn, and then, I cannot wait to pass it on to you. This was to be my Sunday Dance to Word, but why wait? It’s here right now… go for it!
Some of my projects come into fruition in small snippets, and some take weeks, months, and years long. I have a few new ones coming at you soon…in the meantime, enjoy what the day brings! I hope you enjoy my words, I love sharing with you, and hope you can share with me/us too…
Thanks for being here…
Happy solstice…may your light burn bright and true.
Wednesday Thoughts and Quotes May 23, 2012
I am so loving the roses…they make me giddy this time of year here in Portland, the rose city, named so for our gardens of lush roses, yes, we have lots of rain!
And they are so luscious and sexy and fragrant and I have many kinds growing in my garden…
My wild jungle garden is my haven, my special place to meditate, to sip wine, to write, and to dig in the dirt…now that is some crazy therapy! Have you ever tried it? Why go to a therapist when you can dig in your dirt? Dig in, thrash around for while, weed, toss, keep, breath deep, cry, smile, and pat yourself on the back for doing the work! See…
I love this quote from prolific writer Margaret Atwood…
           In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.
                      Margaret Atwood            http://www.margaretatwood.ca/
When it comes time in the spring to work the garden, I love nothing better than to dig in and get dirty, to weed, and mulch and compost, and plant seeds, and then when you think nothing will grow because dang it, it snowed after you put all those seeds in so you hurry and cover the troughs with black plastic to try to keep them warm, and then turn around and yowza, you’ve got rows of radishes, kale, spinach, lettuces, and oh it is so exciting. And then to pick them for your supper, fresh, earthy, moist, delicious, how can you NOT grow your own food? And flowers…like those roses…
It is gratifying, refreshing, and sometimes body breaking work to garden, but there is nothing like it for me. watching the little sprouts come alive, taking a walk everyday to see the growth, to spend time nurturing, watering, weeding some more, and I am not a weeding lunatic, I love the wildness of the garden too…
and then to be able to just sit, take a load off, smell the air, watch the birds, play with the dogs, in my own little paradise, the one that I steward over…taking care of the earth, I take care of it, it takes care of me… one must not forget that…
then I pick the kale for my morning green smoothies, throw in some fresh herbs, strawberries, and what ever is on hand that morning, my lovely morning ritual, pick me up and make me healthy and happy and vibrant! And a little full of myself too, oh yea…
I’ve made breakfast smoothies since I was a teenage hippie! ha…but Kris Carr has brought the whole experience full circle yet again…Crazy Sexy Diet is a must read for everyone, get on the cart and do it, and make yourself whole and vibrant too..how can one function, and do their meaningfull, powerful work in a body that is tired, sore, sluggish, overweight, and full of junk and processed foods? I don’t get it…
so there,
roses, gardens, food, smoothies, soil, a book and there you go…enjoy the dirt!
